MY STORY

“I was born and raised in a small town in Johannesburg, South Africa, and reign from humble beginnings. I would never trade my childhood and upbringing for anything, as it has shaped who I am today. It inspires everything I do and, to this day, keeps me grounded.

I am deeply shaped by my childhood experiences and by both my parents. My late father was an exceptional conversationalist, and we would discuss world affairs and social justice on a daily basis. I attribute my skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and debating to him. My activism and passion for public health are rooted in my father’s experience as a visually impaired person. Growing up, I was always at his side, navigating the world, especially healthcare systems, which fueled my commitment to improving access and equity in public health.

My mother, limited by the racial segregation of apartheid South Africa, faced many barriers to education and opportunities. Yet, she instilled in me core principles such as honesty, charity and being resilient.

Despite having enormous aspirations, I faced many challenges, primarily financial challenges as well as discrimination based on my race, gender, and age. But despite all the odds stacked against me, there were two defining moments in my career, attaining my PhD in Public Health at the age of 27 and being named Woman of the Year in Health in South Africa that same year.

For over a decade, I have worked in research, advocacy, and programming, focusing on women and youth. I have had the privilege of leading global programs, shaping international policies, and being at the helm of large-scale organizations. Most importantly, I have remained an activist, always tackling injustice.

In 2022, I launched what I consider a legacy project and a way of giving back—the Shakira Choonara Young African Scholar Award, which you can also find on this site.

Having witnessed the profound inequalities faced by women, youth, and patients across the world—and the systemic injustices that shape our institutions—I remain deeply passionate and committed to making a difference in any way I can. I am truly humbled to hold a long list of accolades, to be entrusted with leadership roles, and to find myself in the spaces I am today.

Outside of healthcare, I spend every spare moment traveling and exploring the world. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I began pursuing acting. I also love adventure sports, particularly skydiving—the thrill and the breathtaking view of the earth are incomparable. Finally, I am a serene yogi, finding balance and peace through my practice.

Thank you for your love and support, I am, only because so many stand by my side, encourage me, believe in me and invest in me. I am because you are.”
